Sara Jensen

BHSc-Mid, RM

Self-Employed Midwife

I qualified as a General and Obstetric Nurse in 1981 and worked in a variety of medical/surgical fields eventually finding a niche in Women's Health, which sparked the desire to become a midwife. I achieved the Certificate in Midwifery in 1990 and worked at Middlemore Hospital and Birthcare. After taking a long break to raise children and dabble in other fields, I returned to midwifery and completed the Bachelor of Health Science university degree in Midwifery. I then initially returned to shift-working as a core midwife at North Shore Hospital but was soon drawn to the continuity-of-care midwifery practice as a self-employed independent midwife joining the friendly MotherWise team.

I have four teenagers who "keep me real", (when not giving me grey hair!) I love the bush and the sea and any activity that takes me there.

Midwifery Philosophy

I am still in awe of the miracles that occur between conception and motherhood. To be part of that process is a privilege.

I value women and their important role in family and society. My aim is to support women to safely achieve their ideal birthing experience and assist them as they transition into motherhood. I achieve this through respect, informed choice and partnership. Birth is a natural life event and should remain that, ideally with as little interference as possible. Recognising that birth can sometimes deviate from normal, I value well-justified intervention and am comfortable liaising with other professionals and providing care in high-risk situations.

I love working with women of all ages from all backgrounds and am developing a special interest in working with teenage mothers, helping to create a space for them to be great Mums.

Feedback

"Thank you so much for all your help. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without your encouragement. You are truly a blessing and a gifted midwife." (Kerry and Alex)

"Thank you so much for your kindness and support during the birth of Lucca and his first month of life. I will always remember your words of encouragement during those last few hours of labour!!! Akina and I were impressed with your careful monitoring of Lucca and me during the labour." (Akina and Nerissa).

"Sara has given useful advice that has made me re-assured with my decision to have a VBAC. Sara talked with me in a professional yet personal manner that made me feel at ease. What I most enjoyed were: Her encouragement and patience when I was pushing the baby out, her sense of humour, which she used appropriately and how she involved my 3 year old in follow up visits." (Akina and Nerissa).

"I always knew I was in good hands. It's not till you have gone through something like that to make you understand how having on-to-it people around can make the world of difference." (Erika and Greg)

"I felt really safe......I think most pregnant women will love her." (Jin)

"Sara is very approachable and easy to talk to. She looked out for our best interests and put 110% into our care. I’d recommend her to anyone I know. She is truly an asset to NZ midwifery." (anon)

"Sara is an excellent midwife. She has a very gentle way of caring. She listens to my problems and is a very good supporter." (Tresa).

"Sara was by far the best midwife involved in our care. I do want to add that beyond her post-natal care, she was outstanding at making us feel as comfortable as possible before and during surgery in a way that was "above the call of duty". She helped us through this difficult time in such a way that made me want to make special mention of her outstanding role in the medical institution. Thanks Sara. You're the best!" (Dee and Chris).

"We had big problems with breast feeding. Sara was our "go to" midwife, for help. She was great!" (Dee and Chris)
